In 1872, Norton I, Dei Gratia Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico decreed: Whoever after due and proper warning shall be heard to utter the abominable word “F*****,” which has no linguistic or other warrant, shall be deemed guilty of a High Misdemeanor, and shall pay into the Imperial Treasury as penalty the sum of twenty-five dollars.

iverh of Oslo asked:
What nickname or abbreviation is acceptable?

For those of us who were born and educated here,
are employed/retired, invested, and who recreate here:
There is no other name for SAN FRANCISCO!
There is no acceptable abbreviation for SAN FRANCISCO!
The only acceptable reference to The City other than
SAN FRANCISCO is “The City”
unless you're one of us in which case it's “Home”!

COMMENTARY

There are places named F***** in Alabama, Colorado, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. F***** Bridge spans the Mississippi at Memphis. There is no “F*****” in California.

San Francisco in 1905, 1906, and 1941 (to One Mint Julep ChaCha) Market Street, 2006
*The Columbia Broadcasting System's television program 60 Minutes reported that
David Kiehn, a film historian in Fremont, used puddles, automobile registrations, and classified advertisements
to prove the shoot was in April 1906, not the long-believed September 1905.

A heart's been found.

San Francisco is the golden pot under the rainbow at the edge of North America. A beacon of tolerance and mulitculturality, it attracts new residents from all over the country and the world. Perhaps they come for the weather, or for the city, or for the money. For whatever reason they come, many decide to stay. San Francisco has one of the highest percentages of non-native-born residents in the country. Those of us who were actually born there are in the minority … they say that those born in San Francisco will be lucky the rest of our lives.

TripAdvisor Subject: 50 Awesome Days – We'd Like To Thank You All
People [in San Francisco] are unimaginably helpful. If you need help, you don’t have to shout or even ask. It is enough to look confused or take out your map. If for 10 seconds nobody approaches you, it means there are no locals around, just tourist[s].

TripAdvisor Subject: San Francisco is simply unbelievably beautiful.
… I wanted to acknowledge the unbelievable graciousness of Californians from Sonoma to Big Sur. The scenery is unique, the food is wonderful, but the welcome from the people we met will draw us back … Thanks to all [who] helped make our trip so memorable.
